Until recently few in the City, except those with an eye for designer fashion, would have heard of Marco Gobbetti. The Italian executive, 59, may have spent most of his career working for some of the world’s top luxury houses — from Bottega Veneta and Givenchy to Céline — but it was not until he took over the running of Burberry that he really came to prominence in the UK. Yesterday, though, Mr Gobbetti raised his profile further by splashing out £1.2 million buying shares in Burberry in a strong show of faith in his plan to “transform” and “re-energise” the company.
